Attended Grammy Seminar 101. Theme of the seminar outlined consolidation of diverse music fields into simpler areas. Grammy CEO Neil Portnow opened the meeting and turned it over to Awards President Bill Freimuth.

Reason for reducing awards diversity: it's unfair for someone to win a Grammy is a field of 30 entries (ex: alternative Urban R&B) vs another of 700 entires (ex: rock).

Changes include deleting separate male | female rock | country fields and in their place have rock performance (male | female) and Country Solo Performance (male| female). No more rock instrumental. Country instrumental. Contemporary | Traditional blues are merged into Blues. No more Latin Jazz.

After a long line of members politely vocied their objection to these changes, CEO Neil Portnow declared it's time fopr Grammy Members to get involved in Grammy Commmittees. The Grammys will let members use their facilities to discus and plan changes to make the Awards Pprocess more in line with Grammy Member expectations.

Bottom Line: It's important to get the word out to Grammy Voting members about your music - to get attention | awareness | and votes!!

Summer NYC. It's a challenge to live here if you're an Artist / Musician trying to do creative work and still keep a roof over your head.

Just finished remixing two songs on our latest Blues CD, along with adding guitars and hand carving the wave amplitude for a singer with a great Country Blues song. Saw I had to pay rent and bills for two months!! What a surprise - getting wrapped up in music production and mastering while recovering myself from an earlier operation.... reality crashes in when you least expect it!

Talked with bands / Artists on Liquid Fusion (R) Records: told them due to deadlines and limited cash, we will release the above CD in September 2009; however, we have great songs and energy. We need to seriously pursue successful placement of our songs into films - such as indie films with Lion's Gate Entertainment and Sundance Film Festival entries.

We need to meet and get to know music supervisors who need great rock / blues / acoustic / country / R&B / funk / acoustic - and let them know they'll be dealing with a label with artists ready to move forward fast with all in order regarding permissions for licensing.

Bands to watch:

Sean Yox - making history gigging in Europe since April 2009. He's played in London, Germany, France, Italy, Belgrade, and soon Greece. He's been interviewed on German TV several times. What a great rock star!!!

The Kitchen - has NYC soul and edge captured in an explosive set that makes you realise good rock never went away - it's very much alive and kicking in The Kitchen!!! Miss this band at your own peril!!

The Liquid Fusion (R) Band - myself on guitar / bass, plus all the musicians I can steal away from the Kitchen and The Streamers!!! What's family for? We've had several rehearsals in late April 2009 that included the amazing bass playing of Devan Carter - brother of drummer / keyboardist, Kent Carter. Made a great "Nirvana" (guitars hard L/R) type mix of Nighttime Blues.

This blues / rock instrumental has a "Woodstock blues" feel and features Sean Yox on acoustic guitars and bass, with Brewer Shettles playing: electic guitars (through an origianal 1965 Vox Wah) / LP conga / and percussion. Put writers / guitarists / producers to work!!! Make them play!! :)

Playing this mix on the street - Good response. People like the blues guitars.

This is the attitude I try initially to bring to the studio:

- Be relaxed
- Spontaneous
- Feel out the situation
- Take it easy

What I go for:

Einstein's Leap of Faith: We can proceed only so far upon what we know and can prove. There comes a point, call it intuition, or what you will, where the mind takes a leap and comes out upon a higher level, but can never prove how it got there. All great discoveries involve such a "Leap of Faith."

What I demand:

"Blood out of Stone" from Artists. Not perfection. "Leap of Faith." Not autotune. Rehearsal already done. Ready to record. Go with 1st take!!!

My favorite complaint from Artists about playing live:

"Now I have to sound as good as the CD!!"

"No. Better!!"

Had surgery / now feeling great!!

Liquid Fusion (R) Records is switching to CDBaby as it's online retailer and channel to iTunes. I.O.D.A. (our former distributor) is letting go of many indie labels that aren't making them a fortune in gold - yet ... Such is life.

Bottom Line: CDBaby can sell to iTunes, and other online soucrces as well. CDBaby is VERY musician friendly. This is important when trying to build an Artist over time with limited advertising budgets.

Liquid Fusion (R) NYCBlues CD Vol 2 Various Artists was released 10.30.2008.

The goal of LIQUID FUSION (R) NYCBLUES CD VOL 2 / VARIOUS ARTISTS - is to make blues songs (mostly instrumentals) that will take you to the spirit of Mississippi / Memphis / Chicago - all places where the blues in its many forms was born, and do so with the edge / energy of rock / blues musicians from NYC.

To make this CD happen, Brewer Shettles / Liquid Fusion (R), Sean Yox / The Streamers, and Rob Visciano / The Kitchen - formed a core creative team: writing songs, playing guitar, bass, singing, producing, and engineering.

Earlier this year, Sean Yox played acoustic guitar, backed by Kent Carter on African Jimbe, at Columbia University Networking Media night in NYC. In this experience, Sean played acoustic guitar as a rock blues torch using both guitar and voice to pierce the vaulted dome at Columbia's Low Library above Alma Mater and bring students into another world as they networked in a time zone drenched in an electric fire of spirit and soul.

More recently, on May 21, 2008, Sean Yox, as promoter, created and presented to the heart of NYC an "Oasis vs Blur" show at B.B.King Blues Club NYC. Brewer Shettles (Electric "Tele" guitar) and Rob Visciano (Vocals / African Jimbe) joined Sean Yox / The Streamers as band mates to focus on making British rock energy explode with blues edge. Result: fans rushed the stage to dance with the band. One brilliant energy.

August 25th, 2008 Rob Visciano / The Kitchen opened for Sean Yox / The Streamers on the famous stage of B.B.King Blues Club - both bands playing to hundreds of fans. The Kitchen: rock / blues played with swagger and finesse. The Streamers: Sean Yox fronting a rock blues band complete with eclectic cello / sitar / drums / electric leads (2) and Brewer Shettles (Electric "Tele" rhythm guitar). A supercharged dynamic experience, as Sean Yox's newly discovered young female talent, Taylor Cannizzarro, sang a Capella the Beatle’s song ”I want to Hold Your Hand” to awestruck / spellbound audience - erupting in tremendous spontaneous applause.

Liquid Fusion (R) NYCBlues CD Vol 2 is a collection of "Contemporary Blues" songs. The blues is solid energy that can lift you up when you're down. Breakdown to breakthrough. We added different playing styles and instruments (listen to the Juno 6 vintage Synth in "Back to the Blues") to make the blues stay current to today. It flows as the lifeblood through our world and our selves. Wherever / whenever you need to climb, to hope, to strive, to seek, to find, to change your life around - you'll find the blues. The Summer Of Love originally refers to summer of 1967, when an unprecedented gathering of as many as 100,000 young people converged on the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco, creating a phenomenon of cultural and political rebellion.

OASIS vs BLUR / THE STREAMERS

Gig: Got there at 4:00 pm - Stage Mgr asked, "Where is the rest of your band!!!!" Fleet Week - can't move in NYC streets. Singer + African Drum (Jimbe) + Mesa Boogie amp (for lead guitarist) is taking a cab to gig. Other singer is way away - 32nd and 6th Ave, and has to cut through solid steel and flesh to get to 42nd and 7th/8th. Sound check is a non-issue after 6:00pm. Oh well.

We get there and set up in darkness. People are already there having dinner. In the dressing room I use my electric (as acoustic) so people can go over what they really needed to know three days before. Food = bucket with 50 beers on ice. I'm sober. What a bitch. (sorry). There's a cold burger on the side - that's for me. My fault - it was served piping hot. Just had to spend too much time helping get band members into the club and all gear setup on stage. Duty. I grab a cold sprite and imagine how delicious it is vs. vodka. I win.

On stage - I'm out of tune!!! Have to tune the guitar while playing the songs. Can't stop now. Each chord has 4 to 6 "voicings" on the guitar. I use them anyway. No fear here. Interesting sounds. Crowd loves it. 1st chord of the chorus of a song I wrote is transposed to a different key. Very rock / blues. I play what I know. Realize sound people have mikes on the amp. What I hear is not what the audience might hear. Not to worry about that. They will get it right. Hit a few chords. A blues solo. Damn!!!! Sounds good. Crunch / rock / blues. Rock and roll!!!! Sounding "on!!" Yeah!!!!!! The moment is energy and passion and muted strings and hits of wood on skins and thunder of bass and soaring searing notes from guitars and vocals cutting through to make it all come together.

Braydon Checker on Bass sounds fantastic!!! Sean Yox on lead vocals / guitar is tremendous and right on!!! A true rocker doing an amazing performance!! Rob Visciano on vocals (HinduTimes) and African Jimbe - keeps drums sounding great and true. Kent Carter plays drums. Myself - electric rhythm / double stop lead - "Tele" guitar. Guest Artist Layne - sings "Drugs Don't Work" and "Come On!!" Great stage presence and voice. A great young rocker in the making. Watch this artist!!!!

Time to rock out. Hit the Rolling Stones / Mississippi doublestop style of blues - where you play 2 strings as one. Do blues scales (it's a blues club though we are doing English rock). The crowd goes wild on Champagne Supernova. We all know the parts - as on the record. Sounds like we're playing in a huge rock area!! People rush the stage. Its' bedlam. 20 people dancing all over. Hands above their heads. Beautiful girls everywhere. Security rushes the stage. This is great!!!

A true rock event. 16 songs!!! We never stop playing. People are having fun!!! This is really hard work. I love it. Drummer needs to play harder. And he does. Guitarist hits a switch on his guitar and cuts sound. I walk over and re-hit the right switch. Power is on. Crowd cheers!!! I hit a switch and they love it!!! So much for my playing!!! Just kidding. We start to jam and get in the groove. Sounds so alive!!! Crowd and band are one. Glad to be there!!! Too soon it's over.

Just another night in NYC. Outside the streets are moving with people. Time to get real again. When I get back to my studio - my guitar is in perfect tune.

SEAN YOX / STREAMERS Live at B.B.KING - 5/21/2008

Upcoming gig of Sean Yox / The Streamers Live at B.B.King on May 21, 2008. Band will be doing tribute songs to OASIS plus a few originals (Sunshine Baby). Punk version of the Beatles song "Help!" - Rock / blues sound will add interesting depth to these songs.

Will fill in with details on the players as I get all last names. So far: Sean Yox - Lead vocals / guitar; Braydon - Bass; Kent Carter - Drums; Brewer Shettles - electric "Tele" guitar / Jess - Keys. A great line up that definitely will rock the house!!!

Bass player was asked (on an earlier occasion when this band played B.B.King on 9/3/2007), "How does it feel to play at B.B.King?" His immediate response, "B.B.King? Hell Yeah!!!"

Special thanks to Rob Visciano for making his rehearsal studio available in Far Rockaway - the place "Punk" was born.

Liquid Fusion (R) just renewed its committment, as a Grammy Award Member media company, to enter Artists / CDs / Songs into the upcoming 51st Grammy Awards, next Feb 2009.

Getting gear ready!!! Just bought a Dolby 363 SR / Type "A" Noise Reduction unit. Made in the early 90's, this is amazing gear. Need to be a rocket scientist to align the Dolby with the Revox PR99 analog reel-to-reel. Add in digital Audition software and you have an amazing tool to work with.

Posting three samples (MP3) - All recorded direct to analog tape using a (Studer Family) Revox PR99 at 15 IPS:
1. Acoustic Guitar - Only (Dolby BYPASS)
2. Acoustic Guitar - Dolby 363 SR Noise Reduction
3. Acoustic Guitar - Dolby 363 Type "A" Noise Reduction

Note: guitar is a Gibson J50 (1965).

Analog Tape saturation is what this sound is all about. Add in the pro Dolby 363 noise reduction from cat 300 modules and you have music as it was made in the 70's / 80's for albums and films. Way to go!!

More Analog to Think on

It's been pointed out that a better way to go is to just record digital then transfer tracks to analong then back to digital. Further question: do this with individual trks or with a final digital 2 trk mix? I wonder would you notice that first digital step in what is later recorded onto tape: seems to me recording pure sound wave energy onto magnetized iron particles is better that first taking a digital picutre of thousands of slices of sound then magnetizing these slices...

IMPORTANT PERSPECTIVE

The song must be good!! Sung with passion. Singer must be able to sing and have something to say. The above will only help bring out more from a great performance.

WORK FAST

My technique ALLOWS you to do just that - easily record the true spirit of a song and singer and musicians without spending valuble creative time realigning each take / punchin point. Using my method you WORK FAST.

The Artist has no time to worry about gear, but must concentrate on their PERFORMANCE. Thus if you are good at PRODUCING (getting blood out of stone from your performers) then you will have H&S.

If I didn't mention that I hardly apply compression, then I am doing so now to clear up that matter. I never said I added compression. Read what I wrote. I'll add this point to my "blog" that use of compression is minimal and the gear is used to split signal and just add a bit of transparent punch (RNC 1773).

Mic placement in a carpeted interior vocal booth is just that when it comes to vocals and amps recorded in a vocal booth so as to not disturb neighbors in NYC. There is no room sound. Distance of mic to sound source and type of mic / mic preamp matters here more. Beatles songs had tracks made by adding effects (McCartney swirling wine glasses in a tape loop as an effect under music in a song) as well as tracks recorded in EMI Studio #2 with its large echo room sound. Most impressive: the Beatles could always sing in 3 part harmony and never had a bad day - Emerick.

Geoff Emerick spoke about recording in series. On the internet he describes taking an out from his board and using that as an input - and doing this again and again - being afraid he'd blow up all his tubes in the board. Doing this with compressors as well. Again and again.

In his talk at Legandary Studios Emerick spoke about abusing gear. Getting great sound. Recording vocals through compressors in series. Emerick made great recordings. Beatles sound is what it is. Legendary. Is Emerick wrong because he added "effects" to his sound. That's what Beatles' music was all about!!! Strawberry Fields!!

TO COMPRESS OR NOT

What you must ask is the degree of compression I use. Doesn't that matter? Sure it does!!! I use hardly any at all!

When signal enters the 1st DBX 160 it's hardly compressed at all. This unit acts as a means to divide the signal. Going into the RNC 1773 as Supernice (doubled compressors in series) is adding an effect - but again I use this only slightly to add to the presence: It's end result is very transparent.

Going to tape - as we all know - is an effect in its own right. Compression from tape at 15 IPS on a Studer family machine (Revox PRMK1) is quite a difference from a digital signal recorded direct into MONA from the 1st DBX 160A - which is set to almost NO compression.

Analog tape sounds better to us when recorded right. Using a Neumann TLM 103 mic and a Telefunken V76 preamp creates great sound: even-ordered harmonics. Either you like it or you don't: the famous REDD 47 in EMI was an alleged modded Telefunken V72. I've heard people say EMI was just too cheap to buy the real deal. Downside of using analog tape is cost and time to align analog to digital templates as I describe.

Note: In one recent session, I had a bass player plug bass DI into the MONA - we asked each other what was wrong? then I plugged the Bass into the Telefunken V76 / Mona - and the sound was that of a lion not a thin mouse. What you prefer in sound is your opinion.

The right use of gear can make a performance by highlighting what is happening. Fairchild 660 compressors. Pultec EQ. LA2A compressors. Further clearing away of negative frequencies and boosing highs and lows by Parametric EQ is also recommended as that action adds further punch and removes harsh sound characteristic of the mic at hand.

CREATIVE MOMENT

Recording Heart and Soul - I agree the actual performance says it all. My method allows an engineer / producer to capture the performer in the creative "bubble" before it bursts. In the moment where inspiration and spirit exist as they are transformed into the energy of the soul captured forever in song. The creative moment in analog. In all its' rugged glory and gold.

Revox PR99 MKI 1/4" 15 IPS 2 Track Deck - recently brought back to full life by Peter Ledermann / Owner: Soundsmith.

Inspired by the recent NY Grammy panel (Legacy Studios / NY) with Howard Massey / Geoff Emerick (Beatle's Engineer) discussing analog recording of the Beatles, I came up with great way to merge digital / analog sound to capture the Heart & Soul of an Artist's performance.

The Idea: use digital tracks as templates for analog tracks.

Detail: Sound flows from Singer to Mic (Neumann TLM 103) to a Mic-pre (Telefunken V76), and then a DBX 160 Limiter Compressor. Here you split sound - one signal goes to a RNC 1773 compressor then to a ReVox PR99 Reel to Reel Deck (1983) running at 15 IPS 1/4" Full Mono Tracking, and another signal leaves the first DBX 160A Compressor going into a second DBX 160A Compressor, then into a Mona AD/DA 96kHz 32bit interface. I use the second DBX 160A in order to have balanced outs connecting to the Mona ADDA unit: balanced cables with the Mona (Echo Audio) unit seem to work better vs. unbalanced lines.

EASE OF OPERATION / CAPTURING HEART & SOUL

When the singer needs to stop and redo a part, I stop the Digital software (Adobe Audition 1.5) and equally stop the ReVox Reel-to-Reel. At a moment's notice, I hit the spacebar on the keypad to start the digital recording software, and also hit Play / Rec on the analog deck. After the singer is on fire, I can easily go back to a verse / chorus that needs work and in a flash capture that soul and sound on tape and in bits. Digital takes are put on other tracks as they are made, leaving room for instant uninterrupted recording of whatever needs to be done. The analog tape is never ever rewound. It always moves forward. As does the build and power of the session!!!

After an intense performance, the session ends - for the Artist.

LAYING IN ANALOG / COMPING VOCALS

I then get fresh air returning later reenergized to the studio to begin transferring the 15 min 15 IPS ¼” reel direct to digital at 96 kHz 32 bits resolution. After transfer is finished, I start the tedious but very necessary listening / sorting of analog takes - matching them to their digital counterparts. If several verses / choruses were recorded, I can "comp" a vocal from the best parts of a singer's performance (often a very subjective thing here - built on solid trust and experience).

ANALOG EXTRAS

With complete analog takes (consisting of 2 mono tracks / two equal parts - remember we recorded 1/4" as mono - containing 2 halves), I can slide one part of the analog take 0.030 ms apart to create a very slight haunting echo. This is the great use of digital: editing. You can adjust volume and pan to decrease presence of the time shifted track so it does not compete, but fits in the mix creating presence and power.

Further, take a mono dry copy of the analog vocal and use that to create analog reverb / echo to lay in further tracks to add to the sonic presence you wish to produce for the song / Artist.

BOTTOM LINE

Analog tracks - made on the "Fly" with Speed / Ease. An Artist sees vintage reels turn and feels tremendous vibes as music is made. The Artist feels comfortable / ready to unleash the fire in the song. Must have tools: a great Mic / Mic preamp. Compressors. Clean cables. Quality every where you work. And on and on.

The Key: the way you record - never - ever - interferes - with the creative part of making the song.

Result: Pure Heart / Soul - Analog Gold!!!

April 10, 2008 - NYC Legacy Studios - Attended the NY Chapter / Grammy Awards N.A.R.A.S. Presentation of Geoff Emerick / Howard Massey to hear them discuss recording the Beatles and their newly released book: "Here, There, and Everywhere - My Life Recording the Music of the Beatles," by Geoff Emerick / Howard Massey.

Amazing!!! The sound of the Beatles was created by Geoff Emerick: he described super creative ways to change sound. Emerick's goal - abuse the gear / push it to new limits - to create new and different sounds never heard before, all the while keeping the focus on the Heart & Soul of the song, and the Beatles who made it happen.

Examples of Emerick's creativity: Lennon's voice was put through a Leslie speaker (two swirling speakers) to simulate the Dali Lama on a mountaintop; Emerick used a bass speaker as a microphone against another bass speaker to capture deep rich sonic bass sound; Blackbird was recorded outside Abbey Road Studios #2 in a back alley, how McCartney used loops of wine glasses crashing into each other and other sounds from his home to create rushes of swirling energy underneath the Beatle's music in the mix. The richness of 1" analog tape. The Magic of the EMI Redd Console. And on and on.

The Song "A Day in the Life" was played and discussed. Emerick held the audience spellbound as he described taking professional classical musicians, trained to follow every nuance of a conductor's command, and instead telling them to start playing at note #1 and end on note #2, doing whatever came to mind inbetween - all the while ignoring fellow musicians on either side. This had never been done before. Heresy!! What a sound!! Same as taking off the skin of the kick drum and putting a mic inside; bringing the tape console into the control room; recording vocals in series - all things we take for granted today, but were done by Geoff Emerick on the peril of losing his job at EMI!!

Success changed and silenced EMI's tune. The Beatles's, George Martin (Beatle's Producer - "Light's On!!"), and Geoff Emerick (Beatle's Engineer) - never looked back!!

Redesigning the Site

Spent marathon hours redesigning the Liquid Fusion (R) Website. Using CSS coding to get a smooth polished look and feel. I like the spirit of adventure. Surfing and discovery.

Getting ready for a recording session Sunday: putting down Congas / Percussion Sunday afternoon with great musician Kent Carter. Need to see if / when Sean Yox wants to sing vocals for several songs we've been working on: Solitary Man / Cool Baby Cool.

Imagine funk / Hendrix and John Lennon. I know they really did play together, but this is 2008. Sean Yox has the soul and spirt of both musicians plus his own fire, energy, and vision. We have a song Sunshine Baby that is turning unto the American Pie jam of the above. Under 7 minutes!! It flies.

Columbia Media Networking Event / NYC NY

Imagine a sea of fresh, smart, young eyes and ears interacting and meeting people making media happen. And within this room, like a spring rain storm quenching thirsty land, Sean Yox propelled his music and vintage Gibson 1965 guitar into the air to hover and merge with fire in the night. Eagles landed at Columbia: students who are finding their way into the next path in life re: goals and desires in media (Film / TV / Music / Arts / Publishing). It all was there. And more.

Special thanks to Columbia President Lee Bollinger, Richard Kurtz (Dir Columbia Career Placement), Patrick Smith, and Jill Hickey - for inviting Liquid Fusion (R) Records / Sean Yox (Indie / Artist / The Streamers) to be present and add to this amazing event. Everywhere I looked, I could see fire of possibilities forming in people's eyes. Dancers. Actresses. Film Directors. Writers. Ever see light cut by a diamond? Multiply that by hundreds and that is the mystery of the future in media that opened up to all who were there.

The soul of Liquid Fusion (R),"Good energy coming together." Tonight the flight of the eagle became freedom as vision exchanged vision. As dreams became connections. As hearts felt the power of making it real. The energy of tonight will echo and reverberate far into the next night and day in students futures. Tonight students realized making it happen involves old fashioned and very simple core-values: relationships.

The Columbia Media Networking Night

Sean Yox - Artist / Friend of Liquid Fusion (R) - will play acoustic guitar and sing music sets both before and after the speaker at this event - while people are arriving and networking. Sean is a tremendous talent mixing the heart of John Lennon with the energy of Bruce Springsteen - adding Streamers chord arrangements to his songs that make them sound as if 3 musicians are playing at once. Sean is preparing for a gig at BB King Club NYC on 5/21/200. This is a great moment in new rock history!!! Miss this gig at your own peril.

The purpose of this night is to bring the new media worlds to students at Columbia so they can get a first hand awareness of what is going on in media. NYC is the media capital of the world. I would say the Internet (MySpace / YouTube / BroadJam - to name a few) are making access to media interaction very fast and affordable. A musician can shoot a video playing a new song and have the world know about it seconds later.

With so much media interaction, I believe record labels that are savvy with video / flv, as well as recording exciting new artists - will still have a very necessary and important role: that of a filter of 1. niche content, and 2. quality content (talent / ability / arrangement).
